Why Current 3-Star Euro Lock Cylinders May Not Be Enough

Why Current 3-Star Euro Lock Cylinders May Not Be Enough

The TS007 standard, the gold standard that has defined euro cylinders which homeowners have trusted for years, is evolving. Here's why the 2024 update could change everything about euro cylinder lock security in the UK.

If you've invested in a 3-star TS007 euro cylinder for your front door, you've made a sensible choice. For years, this has been the standard for home security, trusted by homeowners, recommended by authorities, and sometimes required by insurance companies. However, here's something that might surprise you: the security landscape is evolving, and current 3-star lock cylinders may not provide the protection you think they do.

Modern Lock Attacks

Burglars don't stand still, and neither do their methods. For several years euro cylinders have been trusted for their anti-snap protection and clever design which allowed homeowners to prevent lock snapping techniques and other break ins. However, whilst the original TS007 standard brilliantly addressed the common attack methods of its time (picking, drilling, bumping, and snapping) two new techniques have emerged that weren't on anyone's radar.

Freeze attacks - A freeze attack defeats a lock's anti-snap protection by injecting and freezing water within the cylinder. The ice physically blocks the security firing pin, preventing it from activating when the lock is snapped. This allows an intruder to break the cylinder and still be able to turn the unlocked central cam to gain entry.

Glue attacks - A glue attack is another method used to defeat a lock's anti-snap protection. Attackers inject a cyanoacrylate adhesive (super glue) into the keyway, followed by an activator spray to harden it instantly. The solidified glue jams the internal components, physically blocking the security firing pin from engaging when the lock is snapped. This ensures the central cam remains unlocked, allowing an intruder to break the cylinder and then simply turn the mechanism to gain entry.

These methods have become increasingly popular because they require minimal skill and readily available materials. More concerning still, they can be highly effective against cylinders that proudly display their 3-star TS007 rating.

BSI Responds: The 2024 TS007 Update

Recognising these emerging threats, the British Standards Institution (BSI) has introduced updated testing requirements for TS007 certification. The new standard has been described as "a security milestone" and is being prioritised because the industry recognises the need to stay ahead of criminal methods.

The updated TS007 testing now includes specific protocols for freeze and glue resistance, ensuring that cylinders bearing the new certification can withstand these modern attack methods. This isn't just a minor tweak—it's an overhaul that addresses burglary tactics.

Manufacturers across the industry have been given until 2027 to update their cylinders to meet the new standard. However, forward-thinking companies are moving much faster than this deadline requires.

Why the Rush Matters for Homeowners

Current 3-star TS007 lock cylinders, whilst excellent against traditional attacks, simply weren't tested against freeze and glue methods because these techniques weren't widespread when the original standard was developed. This doesn't mean they're completely vulnerable, but it does mean there's an unknown factor in their protective capability.

For homeowners, this creates several considerations:

Insurance implications: As awareness of these new attack methods grows, insurance companies may begin to take note of which cylinders offer protection against the full spectrum of current threats.

Peace of mind: Knowing your cylinder has been specifically tested against all known attack methods, including the latest ones, provides genuine reassurance.

Future-proofing: Early adoption of the updated standard means your home security won't become outdated as the industry evolves.

This is where we can help.

Federal Lock: Leading the Charge

Here's where the story becomes particularly interesting for UK homeowners. Federal Lock, a manufacturer that produces euro cylinders for some of the UK’s major security brands has developed locks that passes more tests than any other currently available and has been shown to be a SS312 Diamond Approved Cylinders supplier.

At GB DIY, we have secured access to Federal Lock's new cylinder range, with a chrome version planned for launch soon. This positions us among the first retailers in the UK to offer cylinders that meet the enhanced 2024 standard.

What makes this particularly significant is Federal Lock's position in the industry. As the manufacturer behind cylinders for some of the biggest names in UK security, they have the expertise and testing facilities to ensure their new range doesn't just meet the updated standard, it exceeds it.

Making the Right Choice for Your Home

With all of this said, if you're currently using a 3-star TS007 cylinder, you don't need to panic.

These locks still offer excellent protection against the vast majority of attack methods and remain far superior to non-TS007 alternatives. However, if you're planning a security upgrade, considering a new installation, or simply want the most comprehensive protection available, the new generation of TS007-compliant cylinders represents a significant step forward.

The key is understanding that security is not a destination—it's an ongoing journey. The criminals who might target your home are constantly learning new techniques, and your security should evolve to match this reality.

Looking Ahead: Home Security

The updated TS007 standard represents just one part of a comprehensive approach to home security, but it's an important part. By choosing cylinders that meet the latest testing requirements, homeowners can ensure they're protected against both current and emerging threats.

At GB DIY Store, we're committed to bringing you the latest security innovations as soon as they become available. Our partnership with Federal Lock ensures that when their new TS007-compliant cylinders are available, you'll be among the first to benefit from this enhanced protection.

The question isn't whether criminal techniques will continue to evolve—it's whether your home security will evolve with them. With the new TS007 standard, you can ensure it does.
