Measuring The Hinge
Working out what hinge you need can be quite daunting. However, it's quite simple and here's a little guide to help you.
- A. All fire escape hinges are side hung, so you won't need to work this one out
- B. This is the length of the hinge, the two options are 12 inch or 16 inch
- C. The width of these hinges is 18mm
- D. This is the stack height, which can be either 13mm or 17mm. (See universal way below)
A full technical diagram is included in the image gallery.
Stack Height Cap - Universal Hinge Cap
In addition to the above measuring guide we have devised a way to make the measuring more easy for you.
If you are unable to measure the stack height of the hinge then you can purchase some Stack Height Caps.
The caps simply clip on to the hinge and convert the hinge from a 13mm stack to a 17mm stack. Simple purchase a 13mm stack height hinge and the Stack Height Caps from the drop down boxes above.
When you come to change your hinge and you notice it is actually a 17mm stack hinge, simply add the caps to the hinge and install the hinge as normal.

Very happy with their speedy service. Was sent a detailed e-mail explaining the keyed-alike service which I'd misunderstood and was dealt with patiently over the phone while I dithered over my changed requirements.

I have a front door with I now know is a Millanco117 lock which the handle was turning but not opening the lock. I found GBDIY online (saw Peter Knights review of similar) and decided to call. The man on the phone asked if I am “handy”. I told him I am DIY handy enough and he said give it a go then. He advises me it would probably be the cam which is broken and not the whole lock. So he told me to buy a new cam for about £20 instead of a whole lock for about £150. Amazing cause if he would have told me I needed a lock i wouldn’t know any better myself. So he saved me probably £130 in parts and also gave me a bit of advise about looking out for the ball bearings inside. That gave me the confidence to have a go myself instead of calling a locksmith which would have cost a fortune probably. Really good. Today with the added help of a YouTube video I have fixed the lock and it is all working perfectly now. Thanks so much. Really good. PS. I tried to add photos but it won’t upload - don’t know why. Please pass this message to the GBDIY team as the man on the phone should remember this and it’s good to have some good feedback I hope!

Finding the right part was made easy with the company's very detailed measurements drawing. I was able to tick each measurement off unlike some websites where I was left scratching my head with just two measurements to compare against.
The ordering process was straight forward. I ordered on Friday afternoon and I fitted it on Monday afternoon. That was with just standard postage.
