uPVC Window Handles - Step by Step Measuring Guide
So you're probably here because you want to replace your upvc window handle and you're unsure how to measure you window handle or even if they're a standard size. Well we've got good news for you, most upvc window handles do follow standard sizing which makes them very easy to measure.
Before we get stuck into all those measurements, lets go through a few of the most common questions which are asked when measuring upvc window handles.
Are upvc window handles universal?
Yes, sort of. All upvc window handles follow industry standard sizing which makes measuring them extremely easy. Each type of window handle only has a couple of things you need to measure before buying and we will go through each of these things in this step by step guide.
Are there different types of upvc window handles?
Yes there are a few different types of upvc window handles. The most common handle you will find on upvc windows are espag window handles. These handles use a spindle which protrudes from the bottom of the handle into the window and operates a window locking mechanism.
The second most common handle is a cockspur window handle. Cockspur handles are usually found on older upvc windows and also wooden, timber and aluminium windows too. These handles use a spur which sticks out from the side of the handle to lock onto the window frame.
How to measure upvc window handles
Let's go through a few things and we can get you on your way to replacing your upvc window handles. The table below shows the most common types of uPVC window handles as well as the measurements you need to take to ensure you order the correct size.
Measurement 1 | Measurement 2 | |
Espag Window Handle | Handing | Spindle Length |
Cockspur Window Handle | Handing | Backset |
Tilt & Turn Window Handle | Spindle Length |
The term upvc window handle is a broad term used for all window handles used on double glazing windows. However, these handles can also be used on other windows such as timber windows and aluminium windows.
Spindle Length
The spindle length is measured by measuring the length of spindle which is protruding from the bottom of your window handle. When measuring the spindle you must ensure the spindle is fully inserted into the bottom of your espag window handle before measuring.
If your spindle or window handle is completely missing you can remove another window handle from the same window or another window from a different room. Just make sure the window was made by the same manufacturer.
Handing
Whilst more espag window handles are inline which means they are non-handed and can be installed to both left or right handed openings, some window handles are not. Cranked upvc window handles and cockspur window handles are handed by design. This means that a right handed or left handed window handle can only operate in one direction.
The simplest way to work out the handedness of anything is simply by understanding what hand you use to operate it with. So if you would use your left hand to open the upvc window handle then it's a left handed handle.
Here is another nifty trick to work out what hand your upvc window is.
- Handles that open anti-clockwise are right handed.
- Handles that open clockwise are left handed.
Backset
Some older upvc windows might have handles called cockspur window handles installed on them. These type of handles use a spur which sticks out from the edge of the cockspur handle and locks over the frame onto a cockspur wedge striker plate. Cockspur window handles come in various backset heights so suit the different styles of windows. You can find cockspur window handles installed on upvc, timber and aluminium windows.
To measure the backset height you just need to measure from the base of the handle to the underside of the spur.
It's important that you get the backset height correct when ordering your upvc cockspur handle as this will determine how tight or loose the handle fits. This will effect how strong of a seal you get around your upvc window.
Conclusion
Hopefully with the steps above you should be well on your way to ordering your replacement window handle. If you are still struggling to work out exactly what you need then please don't hesitate to contact our friendly team and we would be more than happy to help you.
