A cockspur window handle, not surprisingly, given the name, has a spur that sticks out from the side of the handle. The spur is longer on a uPVC window lock for extra security. The handle locks firmly when the spur locks over the window frame on to a cockspur wedge or striker plate, ensuring your window is completely secured. Cockspur handles are fastened to the window frame using four screws, usually, though some fasten with two or three screws instead. When you buy handles from us, you’ll find that the screws you need are included with the handle. Take a look through our fantastic range and see which handles you need for your uPVC windows.

If you’re quite comfortable with DIY, then changing a cockspur handle is quite simple. Close your window and remove the visible screws. You might have to lift a plastic cover to get the last screw but that should be easily done with a Stanley knife or similar. Open the window up and you’ll then be able to see the rest of the screws. Once you remove those, your handle should easily come off, ready to be replaced.
To choose the right new handle, measure the distance between the screws, measure the stack height, which is the distance between the frame and the bottom of the spur, and then choose whether you need a left or right handle. After that, it’s simply a case of replacing the screws on your new handle, and you’re done!
